Watch the Trailer for 'NOISEY' Episode 2: São Paulo
Diplo and Walshy Fire of Major Lazer explore the Brazilian city’s thriving baile funk scene.
Brazil’s music scene is experiencing a shift as the country’s baile funk roots evolve from the favela slums from which they originated from and onto national stages. The African-influenced, Miami bass-heavy, Portuguese rap-laden Baile funk is the epitome of dance music in Rio and simply cannot be described in words. In São Paulo particularly, stories of shootings at performances towards funk artists are seizing the city in a chokehold as tensions of a proxy struggle rise between São Paulo’s criminal gangs and a dishonest police force.
In their latest episode, VICELAND‘s NOISEY channel heads to Brazil with Diplo and Walshy Fire of Major Lazer and young São Paolo artist MC Bin Laden to explore the origins of one of the world’s wildest music scenes and the corruption among the city’s law enforcement that only exacerbates the violence afflicting it. Major Lazer is no stranger to baile funk, and avid funk fan Diplo has already been drawing influences from the sound for years (just listen to him and M.I.A.’s joint mixtape from 2004, Piracy Funds Terrorism).
