Kenzo’s Fall/Winter 2018 Collection Went Heavy on Electric Colors and Asian Embroidery

The theme was inspired by vintage cinemas.

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim‘s Kenzo Fall/Winter 2018 collection at Paris Fashion Week was described by the duo as an autobiographical narrative inspired by Asian melodramas. The show setup was arranged in a way that the backstage mimicked a Hollywood production set, whose props and furniture extended to the runway. The protagonist of the collection was Leon’s bleached-blonde hair and the design motifs channeled vintage cinema flyers and embroidered Asian flowers and dragons.

The collection presentation was split in half — the first was men’s looks and the second women’s. The menswear outfits channeled classic western silhouettes such as vests, Glen plaid trousers, sweaters and a range of heritage outerwear like Mackintosh, duffel and fur coats. Asian detailing came by way of the Mandarin collars, knit shirts with piped lining, embroidered dragons and floral silk fabrics. Other notable elements include the multi-color leopard prints on jacket flaps and fur coats, as well as holographic textiles that gave a retro sci-fi feel.
