One of the biggest sounds that makes ’80s music so signature is in thanks to the gated reverb. What was accidentally founded by Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins in the studio has come to craft some of the most classic singles of the era, as well as showing up on the airwaves today.
In this new video analysis by Vox, the clip lays down the gated reverbs initial discovery in the studio during Peter Gabriel’s self-titled third solo album. Videographer Estelle Caswell explains the audio science behind the drum sound, how it went on to define the music of the 1980’s, and how many contemporary artists continue to use it today.
