Japanese menswear label BEAMS PLUS reinforces its unique spin on Americana classics with its latest 2017 fall/winter collection. This season draws from the ’50s-era Beat Generation, a literary movement that gave birth to the Beatnik, a term made famous by American poets Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs that characterized the bohemian, anti-conformist youth of NYC during a time that was at the height of Western consumerism. Often recognized for wearing dark sunglasses and bookishly “hip” garments such as berets and turtlenecks, Beatniks were one of the first American subcultures that brought subversive, underground attitude and anti-fashion to the mainstream media — precursory to the hippie movement of the mid-’60s and today’s normcore genres.

BEAMS PLUS takes on the Beatnik subculture with its collection dubbed “The Subterraneans.” The lineup boasts a range of cozy silhouettes that put a modern spin on classic East Coast staples, such as tweed jackets, blazers, knit sweaters and barbour jackets. A predominantly dark, neutral color palette with heritage prints and a sepia tone gives off a casual but smart look that works well in different environments. Stand out pieces include the M-43 jacket, “a symbolic jacket loved by the Americans including the Ivy Leaguers,” which is revisited with hi-tech fabric and modern detailing, as well as a reversible blouson featuring classic ’50s prints.

Flip through the lookbook above and shop the collection at BEAMS’ online store.
