Havoc Speaks on Losing Prodigy, Forming Mobb Deep, and the Duo's Legacy in Hip-Hop

Havoc drops a wealth of knowledge on the duo’s career.

By //Music

After the untimely death of Prodigy, DJ Vlad sat down with the second half of Mobb Deep, Havoc, in his first interview since his partner’s passing. Havoc details what it was like growing up in Queensbridge, the duo’s first rap names, and reveals Prodigy initially turned down a deal to work with him. The producer then goes on to talk about making their first album Juvenile Hell, Prodigy teaching him how to sample and them getting a deal at LOUD records.

As the conversation progresses, Hav discusses a few of the milestones in their career including their purposely misspelled ’Hennesy’ tees, creating “Shook Ones,” dissing Tupac before his death, beefing with JAY-Z, and what it was like seeing Lil Kim write her “Quiet Storm” verse. Hav also touches on the rumor of P choking on an egg and the cause of his death before looking back on the legacy that they created in hip hop.

Celebrate the life of Prodigy by listening to our playlist of the 50 best Prodigy/Mobb Deep songs ever recorded and by reading our feature on the man behind Prodigy’s mural.
