Atari Mixes Old and New on the Upcoming Ataribox
Classic meets current.

Having confirmed its return to the console gaming market earlier this year, Atari has now revealed more details of its upcoming Ataribox project. In an email sent to fans, the company explained that it was seeking to “create something new, that stays true to our heritage, while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari.” In that vein, the console makes a nostalgic nod to the brand’s past with Ataribox taking aesthetic inspiration from the wood of the classic Atari 2600 with more contemporary including SD card support, HDMI port and four USB ports. Taking a tip from the SNES and NES revivals, the Ataribox is likely to provide access to the brand’s classic games alongside what it calls “current content.”
Well aware their audience is “hungry for more details; on specs, games, pricing, timing,” Atari is keeping quiet for the time being — but, refreshingly, only because they “want to get this right.”
