'God of War' Delivers Bloodshed and a Grounded Narrative in New E3 Trailer
Expect ‘God of War’ early next year.
Sony showcased brand new gameplay footage for the upcoming God of War, the first PlayStation 4 entry in the franchise, during its E3 briefing. This soft reboot of the series sees protagonist Kratos step back from his bloodthirsty quest to bring down the Greek gods, and sees him older, mentoring his newly introduced son Atreus in a distinct Norse mythology setting.
The title was first introduced during last year’s E3 and it featured a divergence from the hack-and-slash ultra-violent action the franchise is known for, instead opting for a more quiet, cinematic narrative similar to Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us and 20th Century Fox’s film Logan.
During the trailer, it’s hinted Atreus is cursed and a key element to the plot, that Kratos’ history as the God of War is unforgotten in this new setting, and displays a myriad of ways Kratos can kill despite the lack of his signature Blades of Athena. We also see how Atreus assists during combat, executing combos with Papa Kratos and firing lighting bolts with his bow.
