'PaRappa the Rapper' Makes a Comeback
20 years later, the rapping dog returns, remastered.
Back in 1997, PlayStation unleashed a video game titled PaRappa the Rapper, which featured a beanie-wearing dog who took up rapping to win the heart of a flower named Sunny Funny. He honed his skills by learning from his friends Chop Chop Master Onion, Instructor Mooselini and Cheap Cheap The Cooking Chicken. Twenty years later, Sony has remastered the game in 4K, while keeping in line with the original 2D graphics and nonsensical rhymes about baking a cake and taking kung fu lessons. In order to win the game, players need to match the on-screen prompts to the beat across six various levels/songs, with ratings that tell you whether your rappin’ is cool, good, bad or awful. As the game’s bizarre premise holds true, so do the catchy earworms which still possess the power to stay in our heads after all these years. PaRappa the Rappa is available to play now through the PlayStation Network.
