A Limited Edition Bottle of The Macallan 40 Will Cost You $8,000 USD
It’ll only get better and pricier with age.
Single malt Scotch whiskey distillery The Macallan has just released a 40-year-old blended Scotch from its Sherry Oak line. With only 500 bottles produced, and a mere 70 making it to the United States, it’s no surprise that each bottle will run you $8,000 USD. Macallan’s master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno’s signature and an individual number don each bottle. In terms of the experience, Macallan describes the nose as smoky, lightly peated with ginger, sherry, citrus, cinnamon, chocolate and wood smoke while the taste is smooth, with soft spices, dried fruits, sherry, citrus and wood smoke and the finish is meant to be long, rich and warming with chocolate, cinnamon and spice.
The story behind the limited edition whiskey is what makes it so special. In 2006, the team was looking to create a 30-year-old Sherry Oak line whiskey and selected nine oak casks to make it. But Bob Dalgarno had a veteran instinct and kept one cask aside and let it mature to a 35-year-old in 2011 and 40-year-old in 2016 before finally deciding it was at the perfect maturity.
You can pick up a bottle of The Macallan 40 now at fine whiskey retailers in New York, or sip a glass straight with a splash of water (the recommended perfect serve) at the Hotel Bel-Air, Langham Hotel, Spago in Los Angeles, Venetian and Aria hotels in Las Vegas, or at the Top of the Hub in Boston.
