Tesla Is Building Its Own AI Hardware
“I wanted to make it clear that Tesla is serious about AI, both on the software and hardware fronts.”

Elon Musk and Tesla are developing a custom AI chip, this news comes from the machine learning conference NIPS in which Musk attended. He is quoted as saying Tesla is “developing specialized AI hardware that we think will be the best in the world.” According to The Register, Musk went on to say “I wanted to make it clear that Tesla is serious about AI, both on the software and hardware fronts. We are developing custom AI hardware chips”.
The tech could give Tesla an edge in the race to self-driving vehicles that many automakers are adapting to reduce processing bottlenecks. At the same NIPS talk yesterday, Musk repeated his determined timeline of two years to get to Level 5 self-driving, where humans can take naps in the backseat and let the car take the wheel. He also prognosticated, according to tweets by AI researcher Stephen Merity, that AI might become exponentially smarter than humans in just five to ten years.
