With some Irish crochet.

If Mr. Jonathan W. Anderson hasn’t already been a household name among fashion admirers for a year now, his latest showing at LCM should earn him a spot on the mantel. After sweeping both menswear and womenswear designer of the year at the 2015 British Fashion Awards, the young Irishman spent 2016 just creating and collaborating: from live streaming his shows on dating app Grindr, and producing hoodies with renowned photographer Ian David Baker, to dropping a capsule collection with A$AP Rocky. With 2017 now underway, Anderson’s revered imagination takes us to the Middle Ages with the reveal of his 2017 fall/winter collection.

“Pagan knights in shining armor. Layers on layers as a defense mechanism. Something knitty and cozy — the epitome of British craft,” Jonathan told Vogue during his London Fashion Week show. As the illustrious imprint points out, the models more resembled squires than knights, however the inclusion of medieval inspirations are clear: tabard-like tops, heraldic symbols, patches that look like stained glass windows, and earthy tones. A student of history, drawing parallels to the Dark Ages seems fitting these days.

Anderson completes his collection with a touch of Irish love through the heavy crochet details. When Vogue asked him about the use or crochet he answered with “Ben (is stylist, Benjamin Bruno) and I thought, actually they look like iPhone apps!”
