POLLS: What Was Nike's Best Collaborative Sneaker This Year?
2016 was the year of collaboration.
Nike releases hundreds of shoes each year under its slew of sub-brands including NikeLab, Nike SB, Nike Sportswear and more. However, among the myriad of drops, some of the most notable creations are born out of collaborations. When the Swoosh partners with another brand or person, the resulting product or collection normally garners more hype for its novelty and limited nature. These types of partnerships allow Nike to reach out to a different demographic depending on the group’s interests, while also being able to pick at another creative’s mind or a brand’s aesthetic to produce something unique.
While this list isn’t exhaustive, featuring mainly Nike Sportwear, NikeLab and Nike SB releases, it boasts some of the more salient partnerships — such as with ACRONYM and Supreme. The year started off with a Riccardo Tisci special in the Dunk Lux High, and that wouldn’t be the Givenchy Creative Director’s only Nike release this year as he also collaborated on the Free Train Force Flyknit. NikeLab then continued to make its high fashion push this year, tapping Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing for a full apparel and footwear collection gilded with gold. Louis Vuitton menswear’s designer Kim Jones also partnered with the Swoosh, preparing the “Packable Sport Style” collection, bringing back the Air Zoom LWP.
Hiroshi Fujiwara’s fragment design continued its frequent collaboration with Nike, an unsurprising move as Fujiwara is one third of Nike’s HTM trifecta. Nike SB also teamed up with Supreme on two collaborations, in addition to Alex Olson’s Call me 917 brand on a full apparel and footwear range. As some of the most memorable Nike shoes were collaborations, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that some of these might go down in history.
