Yankees Will Retire Derek Jeter's Number
During a game early next season.

In today’s most “duh” of a sports headline, the Yankees have officially announced that the franchise will retire Derek Jeter’s jersey number next season. Arguably the greatest Yank of the last 20 years (the same could be said for Mariano Rivera), Jeter retired after the 2014 season with 14 All-Star appearances, 5 Gold Gloves, well over 3,400 hits, and more importantly, 5 World Series titles, among many other accolades.
On May 14, 2017 against the Houston Astros, Captain Clutch will join the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Reggie Jackson, Micky Mantle, and many more, including his former teammates Mariano Rivera, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettitte, and Jorge Posada, as the handful of players in New York’s long illustrious history to be enshrined at Moment Park.
This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, because not only is this honor very much deserved, but the Yankees enjoy retiring numbers. However the future of baseball likely won’t see many superstar, once-in-a-generation-type of players spending their entire careers with one franchise, so it may be some time before we see another pinstriped jersey hanging in The Bronx outfield.
