In an effort to keep Instagram a “positive place for self-expression,” the popular social media platform is now making available a number of tools and controls to make sure its users are safe.

The most popular one is having the ability to control comments. While you could already filter comments based on keywords before, users can now turn off comments on any post. All you need to do is go to “Advanced Settings” before posting and choose “Turn Off Commenting.” You may turn it back on anytime also. Furthermore, people will also be able to like comments with a simple tap of a heart icon. This is a way to encourage positivity within this digital community.

Another new feature includes the ability to remove followers from private accounts. According to Instagram, “if your account is private, you can remove followers by going to your list of followers and tapping the “…” menu next to any person’s name. The person will not be notified that you removed them as a follower.” Plus, for those who feel that a friend of theirs are at risk of hurting themselves, you can now report such activities anonymously. This in turn connects your friend to organizations that can be of aid. “We have teams working 24 hours a day, seven days a week, around the world to review these reports.”
