To celebrate the release of the new men’s 580 Solarized Pack, New Balance has sent visual artist Patrick Martinez to Hong Kong to get to grips with the roots of neon sign-making. Travelling from his LA studio to the South-East Asian Mecca of neon, Martinez meets Mr. Lau who has been crafting neon signage since 1957. Shedding light on Hong Kong’s long history with neon signs, Mr. Lau explains that long before it was considered an artform, making neon signs was simply a way of surviving for he and his father.
