Carvalho Araújo Nestles Gerês House in Portugal's Caniçada Valley
Located within Portugal’s one and only national park.
Newly constructed in Portugal’s Caniçada Valley — and replacing an old structure that was vulnerable to the landslides — is Carvalho Araújo’s Gerês House. Set in a new location along the land in Portugal’s one and only national park, the home offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape and is almost seamlessly incorporated with the nearby stream, lake and forest. Fitting on the ground like an indigenous rock, Gerês House offers access from the upper level and boasts a series of large, multipurpose spaces in lieu of a more conventional architectural approach — thus allowing for both work and pleasure while eschewing a distinct divide.
Check out Gerês House’s large central living room, corresponding terrace, kitchen, mezzanine and more above and take a look at more of Carvalho Araújo’s work here.
