MVRDV has secured first place in the international competition for the Shift Embassy in Rotterdam, a project that redefines how architecture can embody sustainability and cultural engagement. Titled “Rotterdam ROCKS!,” the winning design functions as a striking hybrid of architecture and landscape, taking the form of two interconnected towers sculpted into a family of rounded, rock-like volumes.
The building extends the riverside environment vertically, creating a continuous three-dimensional park of planted terraces, water filtration systems, and varied habitats designed to support urban biodiversity. Internally, the structure revolves around a network of central “caves,” offering visitors an engaging speleological journey through the building’s public routes and galleries. At the heart of this spatial network is “The Elysium,” a 5,000-square-meter immersive exhibition space designed to let guests directly experience sustainable futures through storytelling and interactive installations.
Beyond its exhibition spaces, the expansive 25,000-square-meter complex will serve as a vibrant mixed-use destination featuring a 200-room hotel, conference facilities, educational areas, a food court, and a public observation deck. The project will also act as a living laboratory for sustainable construction practices, incorporating reused steel, bio-based materials, and reduced-carbon concrete alongside advanced explorations into robotic fabrication and large-scale 3D printing. Embracing a philosophy of total transparency, the building will continuously monitor and publicly display real-time data on its energy consumption, water cycles, and material performance, establishing a continuous feedback loop that allows the architecture to adapt and improve as environmental technologies evolve.
