Sumerian Pictures has officially released the first trailer for Josephine, the acclaimed drama from writer-director Beth de Araújo (Soft & Quiet). The film earned both the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Drawing from de Araújo’s childhood experience witnessing a violent crime alongside her father in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, the project explores the lingering silence and psychological fallout of unresolved trauma. Newcomer Mason Reeves stars as eight-year-old Josephine, whose frightening encounter leaves her increasingly fearful and prone to acting out, while Channing Tatum and Gemma Chan portray parents clashing over how to guide their daughter while coping with their own vulnerability.

The film’s official synopsis reads, “Josephine follows the psychological fallout after eight-year-old Josephine (Reeves) witnesses a brutal crime in Golden Gate Park. As she acts out, her parents (Tatum and Chan) struggle with helping their daughter cope, while facing the moral responsibility of demanding justice in a world that’s lost its innocence.”

Rounding out the cast are Philip Ettinger, Syra McCarthy, and Eleanore Pienta. Produced by David Kaplan, Josh Peters, de Araújo, Marina Stabile, Tatum, Chan, Mark H. Rapaport, Josh Beirne-Golden, and Crystine Zhang, the film balances intimate domestic turmoil with the weight of seeking justice.
