Take a Look at This Melbourne Mechanic Workshop Turned Hip Cafe
From car grit to Columbian grounds.
In a creative repurposing of a once-gritty place, Australian architecture firm ZWEI has redone a former car mechanic workshop from top-to-bottom to create an airy, serene space to enjoy one’s coffee in. Located in North Melbourne, the Code Black cafe retains only the outer brick wall, which has a weathered paint finish on the exterior while featuring a simple, pastel-toned mural on the inside. A central double-height column contains the cashier, coffee bar and roasting machine on the ground floor with storage space up top. Ample seating wraps around the column, encouraging people to stay long periods within the “warm tonal interplay of existing spatial elements with natural light and materiality” of the interior, as described by the architects.
