Kanye West and Steve McQueen unveiled their debut collaboration, “All Day / I Feel Like That,” during a private event at the Los Angeles County Music of Art last night. As The LA Times reports, 120 people, including exclusive guests and selected reporters, were invited to preview the work, which will go on display Saturday. Shot in a single take in a dockyard interior near London, “All Day / I Feel Like That” is a nine-minute video that fuses two of West’s recent singles into one conceptual art project. It finds Kanye performing both singles back to back. The first half sees him moving aggressively in a face-to-face choreography with the camera while the second part shows him collapsed on the ground.
In the conversation, which was moderated by LACMA director Michael Govan, McQueen shared Kanye gave him a phone call out of the blue a few years ago. They kept in touch through phone conversations “until one day, we bumped into each other in a store in London. which prompted Kanye to ask him if he would direct the video.” Five days later, the video was on its way. On why he wanted to work with McQueen, Kanye said:
“I elevated my palate. I wanted him to be in charge. … It wasn’t overly thought-out. … He came to our wedding, also.”
The Steve McQueen, Kanye West video “All Day / I Feel Like That” is on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art for four days only, through Tuesday, July 28. Find some impressions from Team Kanye Daily below.
