Building up to the release of his EP As It Should Be on April 6, Tokyo-based rhymesayer Shurland Ayers drops the music video to an enigmatic number, dubbed “Champion.” Having taken to a retreat in California to gather his thoughts, “Champion” is the fledgling rapper’s latest efforts, and toys with a whirlpool of narratives over tribal snares and big room basslines courtesy of LA producer Kenny Dubb. Aptly synchronized with a visually-endearing clip that draws inspiration from Japanese anime to David Lynch-like propaganda films, “Champion” exhibits Ayer’s fierce style in the ever-changing landscape of hip-hop. As director, performer and producer, Ayers proves himself as a multidisciplinary artist in his strongest release to date.
