Hot on the heels of some major Apple updates today, Android also has an unveiling of its own with a new update for its Lollipop operating system. Rolling out Android 5.1 “Lollipop,” the new update improves upon some deficiencies in the 5.0 version. Along with expected stability and performance improvements, there are several notable new functions being introduced. For starters, Quick Settings will allow you to connect to a WiFi network or Bluetooth device, without having to open another menu. High definition voice calling is another implementation, with “crystal clear HD voice” offered between users of Android 5.1. For the avid travelers and country-hoppers, Lollipop 5.1 now supports multiple SIM card support, if you own a phone with multiple SIM card slots.
Google has also improved security for lost or stolen devices, where the user’s Google login credentials are still necessasry despite a factory reset. Therefore, even if a phone is restored, you’ll still need to login afterwards. This function will be available on the Nexus 6 and 9, along with upcoming devices shipped with Android 5.1. So when can we expect the update? According to some reports, the Google Nexus 4, 5 and 7 may see updates today, with everyone else presumably very soon.
