Drake Is Spotify's Most Streamed Artist of 2015

Along with the usual suspects — The Weeknd, Fetty Wap, Rihanna and more.

With the year coming to a close, music streaming giant Spotify has released its roundup of the most popular music of the year with its “Year in Review.” The names on the list are not surprising, with Drizzy crowned the most streamed artist in the world with 1.8 billion streams and 87 million listeners. Not only did the Canadian artist emerge on top, his mixtape If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late was also named the most streamed album in the U.S. He’s joined by fellow Canadian The Weeknd (for Beauty Behind the Madness) and Fetty Wap’s self-titled debut in the top three. The top streamed tracks in the U.S. all fall in the genres of hip-hop/R&B with “Trap Queen” from Fetty Wap and The Weeknd’s “The Hills” and “Earned It.” However, the most streamed artist in one day is Justin Bieber, with a record-breaking 36 million streams on November 13. Additionally, Ed Sheeran remains the most streamed artist of all time on Spotify with 3 billion streams to date.

As for the females, Rihanna reigns on top with Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj following behind. It’s interesting to note that two other female artists who could have possibly made it on this list — Taylor Swift and Adele — are both missing. While Adele’s past albums are on the service, her latest record-smashing 25 is not. Additionally, while Taylor Swift’s 1989 came out in 2014, none of her discography is available on Spotify.

Globally, dance-oriented tracks were more popular with summer jam “Lean On” by Major Lazer followed by Felix Jaehn’s tropical house remix of OMI’s “Cheerleader,” and finally “Uptown Funk” from Mark Ronson. Spotify’s breakout artist of the year also falls in the electronic category, with Norwegian DJ/producer Kygo taking the title. Check out the full list here.
