For over a year, Montreal-based clothing boutique SSENSE has been enlisting talented artists and producers to put together mixes to be shared with their enormous global following. Sango, STWO, Kaytranada, Brenmar and Ejecta are just of a few of the dozens of artists who have previously provided mixes to the cause. The latest producer to lend his talents to SSENSE is New York City-based producer Shy Guy who blends tracks he’s done for guys like Le1f and Black Dave with releases from the likes of Danny Brown, Max B and more. Read what SSENSE had to say about the mix below, and stream it up top.
If James Bond has taught us anything, it’s that we like our beats like we like our martinis: shaken, not stirred. Shy Guy’s quaking rhythms have kept us vibrating since his mixtape beats, James Beats — an instrumental hip-hop album that remixed the theme songs from the famed secret service films — dropped in 2010. The mixtape, as it turns out, was just the beginning for the dallas-born, NYC-based producer. In 2012, Shy Guy worked on Joey Bada$$’s breakout mixtape 1999, followed up in 2013 by contributions to NYC vogue-rap star Le1f’s tree house. A sound engineer, producer, and DJ, Shy Guy’s compositions are characterized by compelling use of samples, and brassy beats influenced by everything from southern crunk to trap and hip hop.
