In this day and age, most albums/mixtapes/projects fall by the wayside of the general public and music community, and it can be argued that singles are the driving force of sales and, well, artists’ careers. This mind state was expressed by Maseo, the DJ of legendary hip-hop trio De La Soul, in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, in which he stated, “I think putting out those singles would be more impressionable than dropping an album at this present day in music.” So, instead of announcing a full-on album campaign just yet, De La will be releasing monthly singles beginning with “Get Away,” which should be hitting the ‘net any day now. The track includes a sample from a skit on 1997’s Wu-Tang Forever, and Maseo describes it as, “a great record to reintroduce ourselves with.” He goes on to say, “It’s pretty much reflecting on the state of hip-hop at this moment. Everything is redundant. Everything sounds the same. No real lyrical content. Everybody’s just doing business, not really creating.” After 25 years in the game and over 8 since they last released a single or album together, it will be exciting to hear what De La has in store for us. A new LP, You’re Welcome, will get delivered eventually, but for now the songs will have to do.
