SwiftKey has released a very interesting study on the use of emojis around the world, with a report that analyzed over more than 1 billion pieces of emoji data in a range of categories. Aggregating its findings, SwiftKey was able to determine which emojis were more popular in which countries, and its findings may surprise you. Uncharacteristically, Canada scored the highest in using emojis from categories that may seem more typically “American,” such as money, raunchiness, violence and sports. And in a plot twist, Russian speakers use three times more romantic emoji than the average person, however, the French still maintain its romantic reputation with four times more use of the heart emoji than other languages. Australians stay true to its indulgent and carefree stereotypes with double the average amount of alcohol-themed emoji, 65 percent higher usage of drug-related emoji, while also leading for junk food and holiday. Last but not least, and maybe least surprisingly, Americans lead for a random assortment of emoji usage in a variety of categories. Check out more of SwiftKey’s findings in its report here, and let us know what surprised (or did not surprise) you.
