Comme des Garcons

COMME des GARÇONS, meaning “like boys” in French, is a label by Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo who owns the company with her husband, Adrian Joffe ,founded in 1969 and established as a company in 1973. Renowned for its avant garde aesthetic and unconventional silhouettes, Kawakubo transformed the brand into a successful fashion label. CDG is headquartered in Tokyo’s Aoyama district, with a strong worldwide presence. COMME des GARÇONS also includes many diffusion lines, such as PLAY, Noir, Homme Plus, Homme Plus Sport, SHIRT, Tricot and more. Later in 2004, CDG developed a market-based department store Dover Street Market, which stock its main collections as well as its diffusion lines, among a variety of other designers and labels, and features biannual store overhauls for the new season, with art installations and interior designs by Kawakubo herself, among numerous other designers and artists. Dover Street Market is currently open in London, Tokyo, New York and Beijing. Kawakubo’s proteges, Junya Watanabe and Tao Kurihara are two designers that have established successful eponymous labels under the COMME des GARÇONS umbrella.
