It’s not often that the Alexander McQueen archive pieces see the light of day, but when they do it’s fitting to have them displayed alongside masterpieces of modern and contemporary art. Located at The Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, and presented in partnership with Barrett Barrera Projects, “Statement Pieces: Contemporary Fashion Design and the Gibbes Collection,” crafts a visual conversation between fashion and fine art.

The exhibit “offered an opportunity to recontextualize our collection, and to bring world-class fashion design to our galleries,” said Sara Arnold, the Gibbes’ director of curatorial affairs in an email to Artnet.

The exhibition features a diverse array of legendary designers, including Alexander McQueen, COMME des GARÇONS, Gucci, Dapper Dan, and more. Each piece is juxtaposed against the backdrop of the Gibbes permanent collection, which spans from traditional works of the 18th century to mixed media pieces of contemporary art today.

Though not dictated by one another, many of the archive garments complement their respective art pieces. Dapper Dan is paired with Barkley Hendricks, Alexander McQueen SS09 is set against Thomas Sully portrait, and a look from COMME des GARÇONS is appropriately matched to a Donte K. Hayes sculpture.

‘Statement Pieces’ is on view from now until April 27 at the Gibbes Museum of Art. Tickets are available online and in-person.
