adidas

adidas is a leading German sportswear brand that produces sports shoes, clothing and accessories, founded by Adolf Adi in 1949. In 1993, Robert Louis-Dreyfus bought Adidas and revamped it into a marketing-driven brand and it goes public in 1995. adidas has produced many of the most popular sneaker models, including the Stan Smith, Superstar and the ZX Flux, and made well-known collaboration with Yohji Yamamoto for Y-3, Stella McCartney, Kanye West, Eason Chan, etc. Currently adidas manufactures products for everything from soccer and basketball, to baseball and skateboarding. Founded as the result of a family feud between brothers Adolf “Adi” and Rudolf “Rudi” Dassler during World War II, the Dassler’s existing shoe business was split in 1947 between Adi, who founded adidas in August 1949, and Rudi, who would go on to found PUMA. In subsequent years, the intense business rivalry between the two brothers’ brands, both of which continue to be based in their hometown of Herzogenaurach, divided the town along brand loyalty. adidas received its big break at the 1954 World Cup final between the German and Hungarian soccer teams, with the Germans wearing adidas cleats in their unexpected victory. Again in the 1970 FIFA World Cup, adidas provided the iconic TELSTAR ball design and has since designed the official match ball for every World Cup since. With Adi’s death in 1978 and near-bankruptcy in, his son Horst assumed control of the company until his own death in 1987. adidas was bought in 1989 by French industrialist Bernard Tapie, who moved production offshore to Asia. adidas was then sold to Robert Louis-Dreyfus in 1993 to offset Tapie’s debt. Since then, adidas has innovated several sneaker technologies such as Torsion, the Equipment concept and the Predator football boot, as well as entering critically acclaimed collaborations with Yohji Yamamoto in 2003, Stella McCartney in 2004, and Kanye West under its adidas Originals label in 2014.adidas posted a net profit of $339 million USD in the third quarter of 2015 alone.
