Netflix has officially tapped Keanu Reeves to star in the upcoming action film Maelstrom, stepping into the leading role after Reacher actor Alan Ritchson dropped out of the production. The project sees Reeves partner with Carry-On director Jaume Collet-Serra.
The film centers on a Federal Marshal tasked with protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer who is seeking witness protection ahead of her courtroom testimony. The high-stakes scenario unfolds across a single evening as a ferocious hurricane moves in, cutting off all communication lines and preventing outside backup from reaching the location. Trapped inside, the pair must fight off a coordinated assault by the arms dealer’s operatives while surviving the catastrophic storm outside.
Screenwriter Mark Bianculli is currently polishing the script from an original draft by the late writer Gregory Fitzpatrick. Originally sold to Warner Bros. as a spec script in 1993 and widely billed as “Die Hard in a hurricane,” the revived title marks the first feature under former Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov’s new production agreement with Netflix.
