ICA Miami to Host Largest Survey of Joyce Pensato

This December, the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami will host a monumental exhibition on the late, seminal American painter Joyce Pensato. Bringing together over 60 works across five decades, the survey signals the artist’s largest presentation yet that offers viewers an insightful look into the artist’s extensive practice that traces her earlier methods of gestural abstraction to her popular compositions comprised of black and white figuration.
The namesake exhibition will highlight Pensato’s early Batman drawings from 1976, oil paintings featuring colorful scrawling in graffiti-esque forms and enamel pieces that she made in the early 1990s that feature iconic cartoon characters and forms depicting live action figures from Felix the Cat to reimaginings of Disney as well as South Park characters.
“Joyce Pensato brought a distinct genius to her practice and her tracing of American pop culture, positioning her as a truly genre – defining artist. Recognition of Joyce’s contributions is belated, and the full scope of her influence and language have never been brought together in a holistic exhibition that reflects the breadth of her practice,” said Gartenfeld. “We are excited to create this critical platform to understand her work in depth, building upon ICA Miami’s history of expanding scholarship on influential artists whose practices have yet to be fully explored.”
Joyce Pensato will launch during Miami Art week this December.
