A Taste of Home With Cory Ng
We followed the chef behind Potluck Club and Phoenix Palace through Chinatown for the latest installment of ‘Hypebeast: Diaries.’
Cory Ng is one of the famous faces behind Chinatown, New York City’s favorite foods. The 37-year-old restaurateur and chef – the mastermind behind downtown NYC’s Potluck Club and its sister restaurant, Phoenix Palace – is a true force in serving up creative Cantonese-American fusion cuisine, and he let us follow him along to get a closer look at his day-to-day, from the kitchen to courtside, and beyond.
“This place is supposed to look like what growing up in Chinatown, New York looks like,” Ng said as he walked us through the entryway of Potluck Club, drawing specific influence from the neighborhood during the 1970s and 1980s.
Ng takes us through his neighborhood streets, pointing out landmarks like the Wyndham Garden Hotel, which used to be the last-standing Chinese music theater in Chinatown called Music Palace, before inviting us into Phoenix Palace for the celebratory Lunar New Year Senior Meal.
In the words of Ng himself: “Don’t get it twisted, kid. This is 20 years of putting our best foot forward every single day. We took the stairs to get here.”
