Jason Voorhees is unarguably one of the most iconic mask-wearing characters in pop culture, but the Friday the 13th staple is now encouraging New Yorkers to use a different kind of mask — face masks.

In a PSA created by Ogilvy Health and the Chimney Group, Voorhees is promoting the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in New York City. The one-minute visual sees the antagonist doing regular-people things in the city — trying to hail a cab, taking the subway, walking in the park — and touching on his desire to be a “normal” person. “The mask kind of makes people uncomfortable,” he says in a voiceover. “I wish people could see me for who I am…I know, the whole chainsaw thing, the woods, sneaking up on people — I get it. I don’t have the best reputation.” The visual ends with a little girl handing Voorhees a free face mask, which he puts it on over his goaltending mask. He continues, “But the thing is, behind the mask, I’m just a regular guy. I’m not scary at all. I have a cat.”

The PSA arrives as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that Western New York has been given the medical clearance to enter Phase 4 of its reopening. He also shared that the state will decide July 1 regarding the slowing down of indoor dining’s reopening in New York City.

In case you missed it, California Governor Gavin Newsom ordered the closure of bars due to the rising cases of COVID-19.
