Toyota has updated the GR86 for the Japanese market, introducing a series of performance and safety refinements derived directly from the company’s rigorous motorsport endeavors. Leveraging feedback from its participation in Japan’s demanding Super Taikyu endurance race series, Gazoo Racing continues its philosophy of continuous improvement. The latest model-year update focuses strictly on sharpening driving dynamics and tactile engagement, leaving the naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder powertrain untouched while elevating how the chassis communicates with the driver.
Engineers targeted the coupe’s electronic systems to extract more precise responses. The throttle control settings have been recalibrated to deliver better linearity from pedal application to acceleration, specifically aimed at improving corner-exit characteristics and predictability in slippery conditions. Additionally, the electric power steering system received targeted tweaks to enhance stability during high-speed cornering and mitigate wheel wobble over rough surfaces. For driving purists, manual-transmission models feature a highly specific modification to the shift gate. The chamfer between fourth and fifth gear has been broadened by exactly 0.5 millimeters to facilitate seamless downshifting.
Inside the cabin, the premium RZ trim receives subtle aesthetic upgrades, including a cast iron black finish for the switchgear and expanded red accents for models equipped with the two-tone interior theme. On the exterior, the refresh marks the return of the Solid Gray paint finish, a beloved but rare color previously offered for only six months on the first-generation 86 back in 2017. Toyota also bolstered the vehicle’s safety technology by upgrading the EyeSight driver-assist suite, replacing the previous dual-camera setup with a new triple-camera system that includes an ultra-wide-angle monocular lens to vastly expand the forward field of view.
Catering to the grassroots motorsport community, the stripped-back Cup Car Basic variant, which arrives on steel wheels ready for track modification, is now available with a six-speed automatic transmission for the first time. Japanese deliveries are scheduled to begin this December. Pricing remains exceptionally aggressive in its home market, starting at ¥2,936,000 yen JPY (approximately $18,600 USD) for the entry-level RC manual and scaling up to ¥3,616,000 yen JPY (around $22,900 USD) for the top-spec RZ automatic, keeping the acclaimed sports car highly accessible for enthusiasts abroad.
