Summary

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed the company has not yet set an internal launch window or pricing strategy for the PlayStation 6, citing a global memory crisis complicating hardware timelines.

Rising component costs fueled by the massive demand for RAM in artificial intelligence data centers have already pushed PlayStation 5 prices to record highs.

Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has confirmed that the tech giant remains unable to lock down a launch date for its next-generation console. While industry analysts previously anticipated a PlayStation 6 debut by 2027, the volatile semiconductor market and a widespread global storage crisis have forced the manufacturer to hit the brakes. Sourcing components has become increasingly difficult as the booming artificial intelligence sector dominates the supply chain, consuming massive amounts of RAM for data centers and driving up manufacturing costs across the consumer tech landscape.

This economic squeeze is already reshaping the current generation’s pricing model. Historically, consoles become more affordable late in their lifecycles, but the PlayStation 5 has bucked that trend entirely. In April, Sony hiked the hardware’s cost to unprecedented levels, pushing the standard disc edition to $649.99, the Digital Edition to just under $600 USD and the premium PS5 Pro to a staggering $900 USD. Prioritizing business survival and profitability over fixed release cycles, the company appears reluctant to commit to PlayStation 6 pricing or production until the memory market stabilizes.

Compounding the hardware delays is a controversial mandate regarding game preservation. A recent announcement confirmed that Sony will permanently cease production of physical game discs for all new titles starting in January 2028. Moving toward a strictly digital ecosystem makes it highly unlikely that the PlayStation 6 will even feature a disc drive, effectively locking out backwards compatibility for existing physical libraries and 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays.

The aggressive pivot has fractured the community, sparking widespread backlash from game preservation advocates and long-time fans who feel alienated by the brand’s recent direction. In response to the digital-only mandate and soaring hardware prices, frustrated players are organizing a “PSBlackout” protest. Scheduled to run from August 23 – 30, 2026, the week-long economic strike encourages gamers to unplug their systems entirely, calling for a total halt on logins, play sessions and digital purchases. How the Japanese gaming juggernaut responds to this mounting consumer pressure remains to be seen, but the road to the PlayStation 6 looks more turbulent than ever.
