NovelKeys has given its CLASSIC-TKL keyboard a refined makeover with the new Underscore Edition, a fully assembled build that trades the tinkering for a clean, retro-minded look. Rather than reinvent the board, the release keeps the same chassis longtime fans already know and wraps it in timeless colorways designed to sit comfortably on any desk.
The retro appeal starts with the keycaps. The Underscore Edition is built around a set of warm, classic beige GMK CYL keycaps, the kind of understated cream tone that recalls the vintage computing palettes of decades past. It’s a deliberately nostalgic choice, and one that sets the mood for the rest of the board’s restrained styling.
That aesthetic carries across three colorways, each tuned to a slightly different vibe. Clay keeps things neutral and unobtrusive, letting the beige keycaps read as uniform and elegant. Boulder pushes into what NovelKeys calls the darker side of beige, an earthier, warmer tone that stays understated while adding a little depth. Lichen is the most playful of the trio, dusty overall but with just enough of a pop to stand out from the other two.
Beyond the finish, this is very much a ready-to-go package. The Underscore builds on the CLASSIC-TKL chassis and arrives assembled with a full complement of NovelKeys’ better components, including pre-tuned TypePlus stabilizers, NovelKeys x TypePlus Classic Blue switches, a color-matched premium cable, a gold badge and lightbar, and a custom Underscore silicone base. A hot-swap circuit board keeps the door open for switch swaps down the line, but the whole point is that it works the moment the box is opened.
