The couple previously operated a successful jellyfish-centric attraction in Kyiv but were forced to leave the facility behind when fleeing the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Recognizing the universal draw of the pulsing, translucent creatures, the founders quickly sought to recreate their passion project in South Florida as their first stateside aquatic endeavor.
Transforming a former Wells Fargo bank branch into an underwater sanctuary, the 10,000-square-foot venue was supported by roughly $100,000 in community redevelopment grants from the city. The immersive space is designed to foster a sense of deep tranquility, pairing its 21 specialized tanks with five-meter-high 3D projections that simulate the feeling of drifting through open currents.
Inside, the museum rotates through a diverse roster of marine life acquired via licensed aquaculture partners. Current highlights include Japanese sea nettles, spotted jellies and the upside-down jellyfish, a species commonly found resting on the seafloor among Florida’s native mangrove swamps. Because the animals consist almost entirely of water and possess a simple nerve net rather than a centralized brain, their rhythmic movements offer a meditative visual experience unmatched by traditional aquariums.
Beyond aesthetics, the founders aim to provide essential ecological context. Expert guides educate visitors on the massive scale of the global jellyfish population, which currently encompasses roughly 4,000 known species. By placing these ancient survivors in a controlled, highly stylized environment, the facility bridges the gap between science and art to offer an up-close perspective typically reserved for deep-sea divers.
