Can-Am introduced two wild side-by-side concepts that push the boundaries of extreme all-terrain engineering. Dubbed the Defender Prerunner and Maverick R XRay, these conceptual flights of fancy serve as unrestricted design studies rather than impending production models. Unencumbered by mass-manufacturing realities, the brand’s designers created aggressive purpose-built machines that signal future stylistic evolutions in the off-road space.

Conceived as the ultimate remote race support vehicle, the Defender Prerunner is a gargantuan six-wheeled beast engineered to conquer the planet’s most grueling environments. The custom crew cab truck rides on a heavy-duty 6×6 configuration, anchoring its stance with rugged beadlock wheels wrapped in massive 35-inch off-road tires. The exterior is equipped for maximum utility, sporting front and rear winches, a robust front skid plate and platforms designed to hold specialized tools. A specialized LinQ bed houses a massive spare tire carrier alongside mounted fuel jugs and shovels, preparing the rig for high-stakes desert recovery operations.

Inside the cabin, the heavy-duty utility transitions to high-performance motorsport aesthetics. The driver and passenger are secured in premium Sparco racing seats paired with four-point harnesses. A flat-bottom steering wheel, fully digital instrument cluster and an integrated infotainment system provide the crew with modern tactical control during remote excursions.

Targeting sand dune culture, the Maverick R XRay takes a radically different approach that prioritizes lightweight agility and nighttime presence. The two-wheel-drive concept swaps traditional body panels for an aggressive exoskeleton structure covered by translucent, backlit panels. Likened to an illuminated wasp nest, the glowing bodywork serves a functional safety purpose: the ambient lights shift to a bright red when the driver applies the brakes. The lighting can also be programmed with various dynamic patterns to ensure the vehicle stands out against the dark desert backdrop.

To optimize performance in deep sand, the Maverick R XRay sits aggressively on dedicated paddle tires. An active roof spoiler dynamically manages aerodynamics across the dunes. Similar to its six-wheeled sibling, the dune runner is equipped with Sparco seats, rounding out a pair of concept vehicles that highlight Can-Am’s dedication to hardcore motorsport culture and boundary-pushing automotive design.
