Chevrolet will end retail sales in China after a 98.8% decline over the past decade.

A renewed strategic agreement between GM and SAIC Motor targets the launch of at least 30 new energy vehicle models by 2030 to bolster Buick and Cadillac.

General Motors is officially pulling the plug on Chevrolet retail operations in China. The American automotive giant will end the brand’s domestic presence after 21 years in the region. Once a dominant player in the Chinese market, Chevrolet experienced a massive 98.8% sales collapse over the past decade. Annual volume plummeted from a peak of more than 760,000 units in 2014 to fewer than 9,000 deliveries last year. The withdrawal highlights a broader shift in consumer appetite as local buyers rapidly pivot toward domestic electric options.

Despite the retail exit, local manufacturing operations will continue. General Motors plans to leverage its existing SAIC-GM joint venture to build Chevrolet models exclusively for international export. The automaker will utilize the established Chinese production infrastructure to supply tailored vehicles to emerging global markets without maintaining a costly domestic retail network.

The decision reflects a larger strategic realignment for General Motors in a highly competitive sector. With new energy vehicles now capturing a vast majority of the country’s auto sales, Chevrolet struggled to transition its domestic lineup. The brand relied heavily on gas-powered models like the Blazer, Equinox and Malibu XL. Consequently, the company will dedicate its resources to expanding its more successful Buick and Cadillac portfolios where demand for premium and electric options remains viable.

To secure its foothold in the luxury sector, General Motors recently extended its partnership with SAIC Motor for another two decades. The renewed agreement extends through 2047 and outlines an aggressive roadmap for technological transformation. The collaborative enterprise aims to launch at least 30 new energy vehicles by 2030 while deploying advanced regional technology solutions tailored specifically for Chinese consumers.
