Summary

Hinge Founder and former CEO Justin McLeod secured $18 million USD in seed funding, backed by Match Group, to launch his new AI-driven matchmaking startup, Overtone.

Designed to counter widespread dating app burnout, Overtone utilizes audio interviews and voice interactions rather than superficial swipe-based layouts.

The platform avoids algorithmic feeds, deploying artificial intelligence purely behind the scenes to synthesize user profiles and suggest highly curated introductions.

Justin McLeod stepped down as CEO of Hinge in late 2025 to rethink the mechanics of digital romance. The tech entrepreneur has now unveiled his new venture called Overtone. Supported by an $18 million USD seed round, the artificial intelligence-driven matchmaking startup aims to address widespread dating app fatigue. Hinge parent company Match Group contributed to the funding round alongside FirstMark Capital and Pace Capital. The overarching goal is to facilitate more meaningful human connections through audio-forward interactions rather than static text and curated photos.

Modern singles frequently report exhaustion with the current landscape of romance tech. A recent Forbes Health survey highlighted that 78 percent of users feel burnt out from endlessly swiping. These respondents spend nearly an hour each day scrolling through options without yielding fulfilling connections. Recognizing this cultural shift away from gamified interfaces, the new platform intends to return to the roots of personal matchmaking. Instead of relying on superficial visual judgments, the service leans into relationship science.

The startup outright rejects the traditional app label. Overtone operates without algorithmic feeds, hidden stats or the pressure of juggling multiple chats simultaneously. Users will instead record spoken interviews to share their unique stories. The company name draws inspiration from musical overtones, representing the subtle frequencies that give sound its richness. By learning about individuals in their own voices, the system captures the nuance required to predict long-term compatibility.

Artificial intelligence serves as a backend tool to narrow down potential partners rather than an outsourced conversationalist. Many contemporary platforms use bots to generate opening lines or build profiles. Justin McLeod takes a different approach by deploying algorithms strictly to synthesize user data and suggest highly curated introductions. Every suggested pairing comes with a transparent explanation detailing why the two individuals might connect. From there, the technology steps out of the way so the couple can meet in person to discover genuine chemistry.

Operations will begin in select locations by the end of this year. To ensure the platform remains grounded in authentic human behavior, the executive team recruited a notable board of directors. Psychotherapist and bestselling author Esther Perel joins the governance group alongside Match Group CEO Spencer Rascoff and leadership advisor Diana Chapman. Interested users can currently sign up for a waitlist while the development team finalizes the initial rollout.
