Salù Iwadi Studio has introduced the Gẹ̀lẹ̀dẹ́ Lamp Collection, a sculptural series that explores Yoruba cultural memory and the power of feminine authority through the medium of light. Based across Lagos, Dakar, and Marrakech, the studio continues its signature practice of merging materiality, craftsmanship, and ancestral narratives into contemporary design. This latest body of work treats illumination not as a static function but as “living matter” – cradled, nurtured and gradually revealed – reflecting the Gẹ̀lẹ̀dẹ́ tradition where the generative force of women is celebrated as essential to social balance and continuity.

The collection unfolds across three distinct works: GLD01, a vertical alignment of three vessels symbolizing the temporal continuity of ancestor, mother, and child; GLD02, a single vessel where generational distinctions dissolve into a continuous, interconnected presence; and GLD03, an intimate-scale piece designed to be held closer to the body while retaining its full conceptual weight. Each lamp is composed of ovoid carved oak vessels that evoke the womb, the calabash, and the orí — the head regarded in Yoruba culture as the seat of destiny.

These vessels are pierced by sand-cast brass spirals whose granular texture references periods of gestation in darkness and anchors the work to Ayé, the earthly realm of ancestry and cosmic circulation. The interplay of wood and brass creates an “architecture of restraint,” where light is disciplined, protected, and released with measured intensity. Ultimately, this design approach emphasizes reverence, positioning illumination as a spiritual presence and a reflection of feminine authority rather than a mere utility.
