With Co-Signs Ranging from Doechii to Denzel Washington, Samara Cyn Swerves Into New Sonic Territory on 'DETOUR'
Equipped with cosigns from the greats that came before her, Cyn just might actually be “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.”
Samara Cyn has spun the block when it comes to co-signs. So much so that she actually might be “your favorite artist’s favorite artist.” In the past year, Cyn has cemented herself as an ascendant to be reckoned with, nabbing coveted co-signs from some of the hip-hop and R&B greats, ranging from Erykah Badu and Ms. Lauryn Hill to Doechii and Doja Cat. Nas, Rapsody, Alicia Keys and Isaiah Rashad have also spoken highly of her, and Smino enlisted her for support on his Kountry Kousins tour. Even Denzel Washington name-dropped her in an interview when he was asked about who he’s listening to right now. Needless to say, Cyn’s made the rounds.
She started off with The Drive Home in 2024, then hit the backroads in 2025, and now, she’s taking an official Detour, for her first project of 2026. The seven-track EP stays true in its title, seeing Cyn step out of her well-cemented comfort zone and swerve into new sonic terrain. Across the just-under-twenty-minute project, Cyn sits behind the wheel and takes us on a trip through emotions and anecdotes she once strayed far away from in her sonic endeavors.
“You are now on a detour from expectation – enjoy,” closes out the opening track, “FREE,” which takes the form of a more polished free-verse offering. Lead single “oooshxt!” sounds a little Doja Cat-esque, with Cyn tapping into different tones throughout the track, alternating between spitting and singing.
Close friend and collaborator Ovrkast. – who first officially teamed with Cyn on last year’s “Small Talk” – hops on “BUSHWICK,” and the two boast a palpable sonic synergy.
“This was a practice to try and get free,” Cyn said in a press statement about the EP. “Have fun. First thought. Don’t overthink. A Detour from my norm. And got to do it with my homies who kept me accountable. Next time you see yo friend stressin’ ‘bout the matrix tell em ‘Go Analog, Ho!’”
