Summary

  • John Galliano has signed a two-year partnership with Zara to create seasonal collections, marking his first mass-market venture since leaving Maison Margiela.
  • Starting September 2026, Galliano will apply his signature “deconstruction” style to archive Zara pieces, blending high-fashion drama with accessible retail.

Zara has enlisted legendary high-fashion designer John Galliano for a 2-year partnership involving special seasonal collections. Galliano’s Zara venture comes almost two years after he departed from his decade-long tenure at Maison Margiela.

Instead of leading another high-end maison, the designer will be working with one of the world’s largest mass-market fashion retailers, reaching a completely different audience than ever before. Galliano’s career, riddled with controversy, has been defined by high fashion, including stints at Givenchy, Dior, and, most recently, Maison Margiela, which he left in 2024.

“Mr. Galliano will be working directly with garments from Zara’s past seasons, deconstructing and reconfiguring them into new seasonal expressions and creations,” said the brand in a statement. With the designer’s signature ethos of drama and flamboyance, one would imagine that his collection could bring an extra edge to the retailer.

In recent years, Zara has strived to stand out from other mass-market competitors like Uniqlo by tailoring its offering via strategic partnerships. Other recent collaborations have included Japanese tailoring label Soshiotsuki, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Samuel Ross of A-COLD-WALL, and Studio Nicholson.

The first John Galliano x Zara collection is set to arrive by September 2026. Stay tuned to Hypebeast for the latest fashion industry news and insights.
