McLaren Racing and PUMA Take Notes From James Hunt’s Rebellious Wardrobe for New Collection
Giving jackets, printed tops, and sneakers an effortless, off-grid look.
For their latest collaboration, McLaren Racing and PUMA revisit racing’s golden era to craft a new collection honoring James Hunt. One of the most pioneering drivers at the time, Hunt’s legacy extends beyond the track with a rebellious personal style that still stands out today.
The James Hunt collection was previewed last month at McLaren’s Designed to Race: Front Row runway show ahead of London Fashion Week. With racing drivers, music artists, and industry experts in attendance, the event highlighted the icon’s effortless dress sense through relaxed racing jackets, throw-over mid-layers, and graphic T-shirts. It showed that racing-inspired fashion isn’t confined to one look but spans more pared-back and playful aesthetics.
Now, McLaren Racing and PUMA share a closer look at the garments. Combining cues from the film Rush and the nostalgic red-and-white scheme on Hunt’s car, the black racing jacket features striking piping and the driver’s signature on the collar. These elements are replicated on the grey hoodie, adopting a boxy cut and embroidered red logos.
Elsewhere, T-shirts play on Hunt’s expressive approach to customizing his clothes with doodles and text. One piece stamps a “1976” graphic at the center in homage to his World Drivers’ Championship-winning year, while another features a heart-shaped motif similar to the badge the driver often wore. Throughout the campaign, the garments are styled with caps and a muted pair of PUMA Speedcat sneakers, in keeping with Hunt’s laissez-faire style.
