Onassis ONX's 'TECHNE: Homecoming' Puts Family First
Inaugurating its new Tribeca home with an immersive group exhibition.
Summary
- Onassis ONX inaugurates its new, 6,000-square-foot Tribeca home with TECHNE: Homecoming, a new group exhibition
- Gathering immersive works by seven artists, the showcase explores the many faces of family in a digital landscape
Championing experimental digital art incubator Onassis ONX heads downtown to christen its new Tribeca home with TECHNE: Homecoming, a multimedia group exhibition. On view until January 18, the showcase gathers a collection of works by seven artists, moving across form and focus, yet all grounded in the connective power of technology.
Employing ancient and new mythologies, AI, bio art and immersive environments, the exhibition reconsiders how, in an increasingly digital world, the concept of “family” extends beyond blood to encompass the mythic and computation, reconsidering ideas of kinship, ancestry and inheritance along the way. “This exhibition reflects our belief that technology can deepen the ways we connect — with one another, with our histories and with the stories we imagine for the future,” explained Jazia Hammoudi, the studio’s program director.
Stepping into the fresh, 6,000-square-foot space, audiences will get to experience works like Andrew Thomas Huang’s “The Deer of Nine Colors,” which braids queerness, ancestry and reincarnation and Buddhist folktale; follow Queen Nzinga of Angola into the afterlife in Damara Inglês’ phygital “N’Zinga Mbondo”; and become one with the Earth in VR-AR pioneer Tamiko Thiel’s poetic dance of molecules.
Other standouts on view include “Drinking Brecht,” an edible, automated performance and installation by artist and microbiologist Sister Sylvester; the organic-artificial marriage of Miriam Simun’s generative, three-channel projection, “Contact Zone Level 2”; and “MEMOS,” an alien-esque family of sculptures by Natalia Manta, which shines a light on forgotten presences throughout human history.
Alongside the Tribeca presentation, Onassis ONX will take part in this year’s Under the Radar performance festival with three live performances: “We Have No Need of Other Worlds (We Need Mirrors)” by Graham Sack, “¡Harken!” by Modesto Flako Jimenez and “MAMI” directed by Mario Banushi.
