Summary

  • Director Lee Cronin reimagines the classic Universal monster as a twisted and gory thriller
  • The plot centers on a journalist’s daughter who returns eight years after vanishing, bringing a living nightmare home
  • Jack Reynor and Laia Costa star in the film which hits theaters on April 17

New Line Cinema has officially unearthed the first look at Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, and it’s a far cry from the swashbuckling adventures of the past. Helmed by the Evil Dead Rise director, this reboot ditches the pulp action for visceral horror, promising a “twisted” reimagining that digs deep into the franchise’s darker roots. The first teaser drops us straight into the mystery, setting the stage for a family-driven nightmare that feels more akin to Hereditary than Indiana Jones.

Produced by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the film follows a journalist whose daughter disappears in the desert, only to return eight years later with something “decidedly off.” The minute-long clip offers glimpses of a photographer snapping a mummified corpse and a spider crawling from a gray-hued mouth, hinting at the “gory thriller” tone Cronin teased back in 2024.

Starring Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, Verónica Falcón, and May Calamawy, the project aims to unsettle rather than dazzle. Cronin, known for his ability to craft tension within family dynamics, stated he is “digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening.” With no relation to the Brendan Fraser franchise (wherein a fourth film is confirmed) or the Tom Cruise reboot, this standalone entry looks to re-establish the Mummy as a figure of genuine dread.

Check out the eerie teaser above. Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is set to haunt theaters starting April 17.
