Among the first presentations at the highly anticipated Pitti Uomo 109 was Paris-based designer Hed Mayner. At this year’s installment of the international men’s trade fair, the designer paired his big and bold silhouettes with a touch of off-kilter glamour to keep things interesting.
The show notes ask the provocative question: “Who has the freedom to look different, who tugs at the norm?” Mayner further explained this season’s design philosophy as a process of removing classical elements from their familiar place. Here, occasion meets the everyday: faded denim jeans and slouchy cardigans occupy the same runways as Mayner’s crushed velvet gowns, metallic track pants, and sequined trousers.
The designer’s signature strong tailoring was combined with billowing drapery and shimmering accents. Jackets boasted front-forward shoulders and sleeves that curve away from the elbow, while elsewhere, beautifully draped capes in houndstooth and chevron fabrics created a dynamic sway. As if those pieces weren’t enough drama, the collection also showcases pleated Ultrasuede smocks and voluminous faux fur coats.
In accessories, Mayner presented collapsed brown leather handbags alongside modular mixed-media bags featuring contrasting compartments. Some models wore chains around their necks decorated with leather straps, as if the handle of a purse were repurposed as jewelry, while others wore lustrous silk scarves around their heads.
