Summary

  • Serbian artist Marina Abramović teams up with Avant Arte for their first collaboration
  • Titled “Maria/Marina,” the time-limited edition print brings the artist face to face with her longtime muse and opera legend, Maria Callas

With a Park Avenue Armory takeover, a major Venice Biennale show and a cinematic opera incoming, 2026 is shaping up to be a big one for Marina Abramović. To kick off the year, the Serbian artist is came together with London creative studio Avant Arte for their debut collaboration: a photographic homage to her longtime muse, idol Maria Callas.

Courtesy of Make Ready, the black and white, archival pigment “Maria/Marina” print features Abramović holding up a torn image of Callas, their profiles meeting at the center. The singer has been a focal figure in the artist’s more recent years, notably in her seance-esque opera “7 Deaths of Maria Callas,” which premiered at Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper in 2020. The piece — set to land at Copenhagen’s moody, subterranean Cisternerne come March — reenacts seven deaths from the singer’s most iconic roles, culminating with the soprano’s own heartbroken end in 1977. In a final, haunting sweep, Abramović herself appears on stage as Callas, collapsing the boundary between performer, subject and devotee.

Speaking on the piece, the artist recalled the first time she heard Callas’ voice from her grandmother’s kitchen in Belgrade: “From the radio came this incredible voice just singing,” she told Avant Arte. “I listened and started uncontrollably crying. It was such incredible sadness, such incredible passion. And I wanted to know everything.”

For the collectors looking to purchase, the signed “Maria/Marina” print comes unframed (42.7 x 34 cm) and framed (50.1 x 41 x 3 cm) each packaged with a certificate of authenticity. Priced at $883 USD, the time-limited edition will be available for a 48-hour window via Avant Arte starting February 10 at 12:00 EST. Check out the edition site for more details.
