Original BTC and Buchanan Studio are set to debut their first collaboration, the “Neotenic” collection, at Paris Design Week. The partnership began after an open brief led to a tour of Original BTC’s Oxfordshire headquarters, where the designers were captivated by the technical skill of the in-house glassblowers.
The resulting five-piece range – comprising the Neo table, floor, wall, ceiling and pendant lights – fuses Buchanan Studio’s romantic aesthetic with Original BTC’s utilitarian British craftsmanship. This creative process was deeply personal for both family-run businesses, as Original BTC Director Charlie Bowles noted, “The collaboration pushes the boundaries of our usual aesthetic… Together, we’ve produced something unique”.
The collection’s central feature is its mouth-blown glass shades, which utilize ancient glassblowing techniques to create a “mesmerizing marbled effect”. Available in a nostalgic “Neapolitan” palette of Strawberry, Chocolate and Vanilla, the shades are formed by swirling opal glass with pigments such as selenium for pink and iron for brown. These curvaceous bullnose shades sit atop sculptural white steel or brass bases that feature a signature triangular motif and a playful tilting mechanism. Angus Buchanan highlighted the dynamic nature of the material, stating, “We were particularly taken by the way the glass transforms when illuminated. It has one character when turned off, and another entirely when glowing”.
Launching at Paris Deco Home, the “Neotenic” collection celebrates 18th-century artisanal heritage through English Antique Glass, a subsidiary of Original BTC. Each piece is handcrafted in England and finished with a brass cap featuring combined brand logos. Prices for the collection range from £489 – £1,249 GBP (approx. $657 -$1,679 USD), with an official release to be confirmed.
