MAVI‘s hot streak continues. The North Carolina rapper is showing no signs of slowing down this summer, keeping himself busy with both new music and vinyl re-releases, most recently unveiling a new edition of the shadowbox vinyl. His latest move? More new music that comes equipped with yet another big-name collaborator. Dubbed “Potluck,” the sprawling, synth-infused cut marks MAVI’s first-ever collaborative offering with Smino.
“Potluck” arrives on the heels of MAVI’s latest link-up with Earl Sweatshirt, “Landgrab,” which signaled the pair’s first in-studio collaboration since 2019’s “EL TORO COMBO MEAL.”
The just-over-two-and-a-half-minute “Potluck” takes a similar tone to “Landgrab,” with Mav and Smi passing the beat back and forth effortlessly to one another, making it seem like this is at least their fifth time working together. It’s hard to believe it’s just the first.
MAVI handles the first verse and chorus, handing it over to Smino for the second. “Lil’ MAVI you got me, word, yeah / Making a play, Mike Tomlin (Woo) / Twin with me too, he Omar Epps, two step to the congre- / -Gation like a bishop,” Smino spits to start off.
